Mira Murati is of Albanian origin and educated in Canada, Mira Murati is a mechanical engineer by training.
She attended Colby College and Dartmouth College. She built a hybrid racecar as an undergraduate student at Dartmouth College.
Murati started her career as an intern at Goldman Sachs in 2011, and worked at Zodiac Aerospace from 2012 to 2013.
She spent three years at Tesla as a senior product manager of Model X before joining Leap Motion.
At Leap Motion, she was the VP of Product and Engineering. A start-up that developed a computing system to track hand and finger motions.
Murati joined OpenAI in 2018, later becoming its chief technology officer.
As CTO, she led the company’s work on ChatGPT, Dall-E, and Codex. Given her long tenure and close engagement with all aspects of the company, including her experience in AI governance and policy.
On November 17, 2023, Murati took over as interim chief executive officer of OpenAI, following the abrupt removal of Sam Altman.
With the growing hype around generative AI tools and OpenAI’s entry into the cultural zeitgeist, Murati has started to appear more in the public eye recently.
Murati said she is “honored and humbled” to step into the leadership role at the company following the ouster of Sam Altman.
